What is a Senior Living Community?

A senior living community is a general term for the different types of care and housing for seniors. When we mention senior living, this can include assisted living, independent living, and/or personal care communities. When selecting a senior living community for your loved one, it is important to keep in mind their specific needs and preferences.

Independent Living vs. Assisted Living

When choosing the type of senior living accommodations, it’s important to understand the difference between independent living and assisted living. Although there are key differences between the two, they are both considered to be types of senior living communities charged with the mission to ensure residents live as safely and comfortably as possible.

One of the biggest differences between independent living and assisted living is the type of support and care residents receive.

Assisted Living / Personal Care Communities

In the state of Pennsylvania, Assisted Living and Personal Care differ from a licensure perspective, but the terms are synonymous. Assisted living communities offer a full range of services including health management, personal care, emergency response and dining options. Assisted living communities are for individuals who want to remain independent in a home-like setting but need non-medical assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as dressing, grooming, showering, mobility, and managing medication. Assisted living residences allow a person with health concerns to continue living independently.

Independent living

Independent living is designed for seniors who wish to maintain their active lifestyle and require little to no support with the activities of daily living. Independent living is ideal for individuals who can still live as they please but enjoy having access to assistance when needed. Independent living communities provide their residents with convenient access to dining, entertainment and more.

What Is Memory Care?

Memory care is a specialized care level for individuals living with cognitive impairments, such as dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease. The care provides residents with a supportive and safe environment focusing on what they can do and not on what they can no longer do. Residents maintain their independence but have staff available 24/7 when needed.
